‘Yo-yo diet’ weight gain may be caused by gut bacteria

Rapid post-diet weight gain, often referred to as yo-yo dieting, could be a result of obesogenic gut bacteria which remain even after weight loss, say researchers who hope their findings could help to stop weight gain after dieting.

If the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) continues to treat probiotics like pharmaceuticals, it will never be possible to win a health claim, says the European arm of the International Probiotics Association (IPA). But not everyone agrees.

Probiotics giant buys world’s best-documented strain

Danish probiotics and enzymes leader Chr Hansen has paid €73m in cash to acquire the Lactobacillus rhamnosus-based LGG suite of probiotic strains from Finnish dairy group, Valio.

UK-China probiotics centre plans GM research

The UK-China Joint Centre for Probiotics Research is focusing on specific probiotic applications, and plans to use GM techniques to engineer highly targeted microorganisms to fight specific pathogens.
