A French firm senses a whiff of opportunity as it makes available dietary supplements that claim to make flatulence “smell like roses”.

Lutin Malin, the Paris-based firm behind the pills, uses charcoal, fenouil, lithothaminne, propolis and dried myrtille in its products to make farts smell like either roses, lily, chocolate or violet.

According to the company, the pills are entirely natural and are a "dietary supplement based on natural ingredients".

“We were at table with friends after a copious meal when we nearly asphyxiated ourselves with our smelly farts,” said Christian Poincheval, Lutin Malin’s founder.

“The gas wasn't that great for our table neighbours. So something had to be done about this. You can disguise the sound of a fart but not the stench...”

The fart pill

Catching wind of the situation, the products, aptly named ‘PilulePet’ (the fart pill), has received clearance from France’s competent authority, The Directorate-General for Competition, Consumer Affairs and Fraud Control (DGCCRF),

While its unclear whether they have personally tried the products, they have verified the use of the plants and the recommended daily dosage.

Remarkably, the firm also make available a special dog powder formula suitable for owners who are “tired of rolling down the car windows during long car trips.” The powder, which is mixed with dog food, is sold as “a day-to-day solution for stinky stools and farts”.

“The fart pill is the result of lengthy research and trials and is on sale since 2007. Our fragrant variants also add a touch of humour for any occasion,” the website said.

"Our numerous returning customers are no doubt the best proof."
