The latest on all things fibre
health benefits of cereals will be just one topic of discussion at
the forthcoming Dietary Fibre 2003 conference.
First discussions on the European Union plans for amulti-million Euro research programme on enhancing the nutritional value and health benefits of cereals will likely take place at Dietary Fibre 2003, a three-day conference in the Netherlands next month.
The conference follows on from a successful event in Dublin, Ireland in 2000. Since then, major developments have taken place in fibre-related basic research, including the genomics revolution, new methods for rapid assessment of health-related effects of compounds and diets and the development of new products and ingredients.
The conference aims to integrate basic nutritional science with food technology, product development, analysis and legal aspects, covering issues such as the role of dietary fibre in intestinal health, combating major disorders such as obesity and diabetes and prevention of cancer.
It will also look in detail at different kinds of fibre and related compounds, such as oligosaccharides and their role in the gastro-intestinal tract, techniques for characterisation and for measuring health related effects, labelling and dietary fibre related health claims. The organisers claim that the conference will be the ideal platform for discussions on opportunities for product development for food and feed.
The event takes place in Noordwijkerhout, the Netherlands, from 18 -21 May 2003. Running alongside the event is an AACC workshop on developing strategies for health-promoting grain ingredients.
