ADM adds to patents file

Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) has been awarded three US patents for the use of concentrated isoflavones combined with other phytochemicals to treat blood-related diseases, cancer and menopausal symptoms.

UK makes health claims for use of soy

The Joint Health Claims Initiative (JHCI), an independent UK organisation created to assess health claims on food, this week advised the food industry of the option of making health claims for the inclusion of soya in food products.

FDA criticised for failure to act on ephedra

The US Food and Drug Administration was put under pressure this week when a US senator attacked the department for refusing to move on legislation on the herbal supplement ephedra. Trade bodies still insist however that the herb can be used safely.

Natrol 2Q hit by industry slowdown

US dietary supplement maker Natrol reported net sales of $17.8 million (€18m) in the second quarter to 30 June 2002, a decrease of 7.4 per cent on the same period last year.
