A lot has happened in the global nutrition industry over the past seven days, with headlines including a new bill introduced in Texas to prohibit the sale of weight loss or muscle building dietary supplements, edible sun care in Korea and new categories for the NutraIngredients-Europe Awards.

USA: Bill to restrict supplement access introduced in Texas

Texas has become the latest state to introduce a bill that seeks to prohibit the sale of certain diet pills and dietary supplements for weight loss or muscle building to minors.

The bill contains very similar language to the one that passed in New York last year and defines a weight loss or muscle building dietary supplement as containing “creatine, green tea extract, raspberry ketone, garcinia cambogia or green coffee bean extract.” The exact same ingredients are also listed in a bill that passed through the New Jersey Assembly this year.

A pre-file has been submitted in New Hampshire indicating that a similar bill is expected to be filed in the Granite State in 2025.

Europe: The NutraIngredients Awards introduces three new categories

The NutraIngredients-Europe Awards has expanded its scope with the addition of three new categories for 2025, highlighting cutting-edge trends and achievements across the beauty, marketing and botanical sectors: Marketing Initiative of the Year, Ingredient of the Year: Botanical, Product of the Year: Beauty from Within.

This now means that brands, formulators and pioneers have the opportunity to apply across 17 categories to showcase how they are shaping the future of health and wellness.

The awards will culminate in a grand celebration in Barcelona on Wednesday, May 21, 2025. Winners will take home the prestigious trophies and join the ranks of industry leaders at this must-attend event.

To submit your entry, log in or create an account on the NutraIngredients Awards portal. New users will receive an activation link via email while existing users can log in with their credentials or reset their passwords if needed.

Korea: Cell Fusion C hops on trend of K-beauty brands expanding into supplements

Korean skin care brand Cell Fusion C has hopped on the trend of beauty-from-within supplements with the launch of “edible sun care” products.

The brand, founded in 2001, specializes in post-treatment skin care and sun care products.

It launched its first health functional foods products—a jelly and powder type product targeted at skin damage caused by ultraviolet rays.

Specifically, UV Care Formula Jelly contains 1,000 mg of a 100% locally produced ingredient called Agatri. The patented plant extract is derived from Korean mint (Agastache rugosa), a raw material that is used in traditional oriental medicine.

It is said to help reduce inflammation and wrinkles caused by sun damage and increase collagen and hyaluronic acid synthesis to improve skin hydration and elasticity.
