As more consumers realise that topical cosmetics have limitations, beauty and personal care brands are putting a focus on an inside-out approach, which aims to improve internal health and wellness and therefore boost beauty.

Many beauty and personal care shoppers who once invested in pricey skin creams or treatments are now turning to ingestible beauty products, such as collagen peptides, biotin, omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamins, to support skin elasticity, reduce inflammation, and improve overall skin health.

Hair and scalp health is also increasingly in the limelight in terms of edible beauty product innovation. As is the link between the microbiome and health and beauty. After all, a well-balanced gut microbiome supports digestive health, and improved digestion can lead to clearer skin and reduced issues like acne and eczema.

Some beauty-from-within innovations are also focusing on stress management to help slow down the ageing process, or aiding good quality sleep, which is crucial for the body to repair itself, affecting everything from dark circles to overall skin tone.

The beauty-from-within trend represents a significant shift in the beauty industry, as it generally moves towards a more holistic approach to personal care.

It’s such a newsworthy topic that we have even created a free webinar about it recently, which features the founders of some of the brands mentioned below. Our seasoned experts share their insights on the white spaces within the category, as well as regulations, current trends and more.

For now, why not take a look at our line-up of ‘beauty-from-within’ brands currently making waves in this growing space...

Lyma

Lyma’s brand ethos is focused on longevity science to delay the ageing process. It offers a range of supplements with ultimate bioavailability, at an optimised dosage, with high-tech delivery systems that tackle sleep, anxiety, focus, and immunity as well as beauty.

Its patented ingredients have been proven in peer-reviewed clinical trials at the doses engineered inside the product formulas.

The brand notes that supplements are “exclusively formulated with ingredients that can’t be consumed through a healthy, balanced diet.”

Viviscal

Hair growth cycles are known to be affected by age, stress, hormones, and vitamin deficiencies, which can prompt weakness, damage, and excessive shedding.

But lately, haircare has shifted to focus on scalp health, as brands are placing greater emphasis on incorporating ingredients that promote a nourished scalp.

UK-based Viviscal has launched ‘Scalp Nourish’, designed to support a healthy scalp with hyaluronic acid, biotin and antioxidants to fortify root follicles. All Viviscal products also include marine protein complex AminoMar C, which has been found to help new cell growth.

Gallinée

An original pioneer in the microbiome-based beauty and personal care movement, the French brand was founded by Dr Marie Drago, a doctor of pharmacy with an inherent love of science who happened to suffer from inflammatory skin condition pyoderma gangrenosum.

The condition, which was caused by an auto-immune reaction, led Drago to learn more about the relationship between the skin and the microbiome. As a result, she set up Gallinée, which is now part of the Shiseido Group.

Gallinée’s microbiome-focused range of beauty supplements includes Calm & Microbiome to alleviate sensitive skin and minimise inflammation, Clear & Microbiome to address blemishes, and Youth & Microbiome, to support ageing skin.

The doctor skin care brand offers an array of beauty-focused supplements including its Skin Protection Anti-Pollution Food, which features “anti-oxidative powerhouse Purslane” for its potent anti-ageing benefits and adaptogens Ashwagandha and Rhodiola to increase resistance to chemical and physical stress on the skin.

The brand also sells a Growth Cycle Hair Supplement, Sun Skin, which contains vitamins, polyphenols and trace elements that help prepare the skin for sun exposure, along with Skin Tea, which includes a blend of camomile, ginger, fennel and liquorice for an “overall wellness approach” that it claims also helps support healthy-looking skin.

It contains tomato carotenoids Lycopene and Beta-carotene to protect skin against the sun's rays, which contribute to the premature aging of skin. The product also contains zinc, selenium and vitamins C and E to help protect cells against oxidative stress triggered by sun exposure.

Spanish Cantabria Labs’ sun protection brand ‘Heliocare’ has launched an oral supplement designed to ‘offer an internal line of defence against harmful UV radiation’.

The product is formulated to offer free radical defence with the patented ingredient Fernblock, derived from the fern Polypodium leucotomos, suggested to defend skin cells from damage caused by the sun and protect skin cell DNA.
