Sustainability at sea: Grontvedt launches ‘unique’ brand of cetoleic acid-rich omega-3 oil
Sustainable marine products producer Grontvedt has launched a new brand of Norwegian Herring fish oil, completely smell- and taste-free, and rich in cetoleic acid, with immediate processing from “fish to oil in 30 minutes”.

The company uses a cutting-edge, low carbon footprint plant in the Gronvedt Biotech factory in Uthaug, Norway, to process their Pelagic fish.

The long-established Norwegian company say their full access to the sustainable marine source that has been an important part of the Norwegian diet for several thousand years. The focus on the rapid processing ensures a reduced risk of lipid oxidation, to create a high-quality end product.

We’ve been working with herring and mackerel for generations and understand the health benefits that these fatty fish offer,” says Bjørnar Grøntvedt, CEO, Grøntvedt Group. “We’ve now developed our own herring oil and made a completely smell- and taste-free omega-3 oil with a high cetoleic acid content.”

Function of fats

The firm says the Norwegian Herring that the new ‘CETO3’ products contain is characterised by high levels of the long-chain monounsaturated fatty acid ceoleic acid, as well as the moderate amounts of EPA and DHA.

The cetoleic acid, which is only found in North Atlantic pelagic fish species, makes this omega-3 oil unique. High value of cetoleic acid, is known to boost the human body’s ability to convert ALA into EPA and DHA.” explains Henrik Traaholt, chief commercial officer.

A study, conducted by Nofima and financed by The Norwegian Seafood Research Fund, observed that cetoleic acid was able to increase production of EPA and DHA from α-linolenic acid (ALA) by around 40% and 11% respectively, within human and salmon liver cells.

The company has highlighted the benefits of the included fatty acids with in-house clinical trials supporting claims ranging from heart and blood vessel support, improved blood flow to the brain, and reduced inflammation to support joint health.

The product

Grontvedt source pelagic fish for their omega-3 oil, defined as those who occupy midwater and upper layers of the ocean.

The firm asserts that "all pelagic fish is low on environmental pollutants as they swim neither close to the bottom or near the shore ensuring it is low on environmental pollutants.”

The company also ensures that harvesting takes place under a Norwegian licence and strict quote management control, whilst utilising the entire product to limit waste.

In addition to the established health benefits provided from omega-3 EPA and DHA as well as cetoleic acid, the product also includes added vitamin D, A and E.

Grontvedt produce and supply their CETO3 branded oil B2B, providing opportunities for the production of both tablet and liquid-based products to meet established needs of both the elderly and young who may struggle with swallowing tablet forms.

The CETO3 brand is already a registered trademark in Norway, with EU, Asia, and US registrations currently underway.
