Ingredient supplier Sabinsa said recent research bolsters the use of its Curcumin C3 Reduct ingredient in products aimed at maintaining oral health.

The ingredient is derivative of Sabinsa’s longtime mainstay ingredient, Curcumin C3 Complex, which includes all of the major curcuminoids that can be extracted from the turmeric plant.  Curcumin C3 Reduct, a hydrogenated form of the base ingredient, consists of tetrahydrocurcuminoids (THCs), the major active metabolites formed when curcuminoids are ingested.

Sabinsa is a major supplier of curcuminoids, which have become increasing popular in recent years.  The company contracts with thousands of small holder farmers in India and elsewhere to grow its raw material.

Curcuminoids in THC form have direct effects on oral tissues

The new research shows how curcuminoids supplied in THC form can have beneficial effects on oral tissues.  Titled Efficacy and Safety of Tetrahydrocurcuminoids for the Treatment of Canker Sore and Gingivitis, the paper was published in the journal Evidence-Based Complimentary and Alternative Medicine.

The paper was authored by Dr Kalyanam Nagabhushanam president of R&D for Sabinsa with the assistance of company founder Dr Muhammed Majeed and Sabinsa executive Shaheen Majeed.

The clinical trial showed that all of the 30 subjects suffering from canker sores reported their lesions to be healed within 30 days after starting a regimen of chewing two tablets a day each containing a 100 mg dose of the ingredient.  The 29 subjects reporting gingivitis symptoms improved, too.  They were evaluated on several parameters, including bleeding, inflammation and a global measure called the gingival index score.

Dr Nagabhushanam said providing the THCs directly to mucosal tissues of the mouth means that these bioactive molecules could have their beneficial effects directly, rather than having them be supplied via the bloodstream after digestion.  This allowed them to exert their antioxidant effects immediately, which is postulated as the primary mechanism of action.

“The most relevant properties of C3 Reduct in its role to protect gingival tissues are its outstanding anti-oxidant property further buttressed  by its anti-inflammatory properties. Earlier research has shown that  oxidative stressors, environmentally derived or ingested as food or even metal braces, contribute to the cellular damage of human fibroblast cells obtained from human gingival and human periodontal ligament-like tissue,” he told NutraIngredients-USA.

Possible oral microbiome interactions

Dr Nagabhushanam said the ingredient may also be beneficially affecting the makeup of the oral microbiome as well, although that mechanism of action needs to be more fully elucidated via further research.

“Further antimicrobial properties of C3 Reduct could also play a role in rebalancing the proper microfloral population especially in oral leukoplakia conditions,” he added.

While the study did not explore in detail the nexus between C3 Reduct and oral microbiome, the restoration of gingival tissue health  could be partly due to repopulation of healthy oral microbiome at the expense of harmful ones,” he concluded.
