When you think of supplements to give your workout an edge, a few ingredients may come to mind. But what about algae?

Certain sources of algae such as chlorella have an impressive nutrient profile that provide energy for performance and boost resources to facilitate recovery, proponents say.

Chlorella is a single-celled, freshwater alga, native to Taiwan and Japan that is naturally rich in vitamins and minerals. Sun Chlorella powder is the only chlorella supplement on the market that is NSF Certified for Sport and Informed Sport trusted.

Jennifer Jimenez, the vice-president and COO of Sun Chlorella USA joined the NutraCast to discuss the benefits of chlorella and explain its proprietary pulverization process that she saw first-hand in Taiwan in 2019.

“We have a mother strain that we've used all throughout the company’s now over 50 year history. So the mother strain goes from the test tube to a larger container and

ultimately into what we refer to as ‘pools’ that are outside. We have pools that span three football fields and there are over 50 pools that range in size, so as chlorella continues to grow and flourish it gets transported into larger pools, until eventually once it's in the largest pool which is stirred constantly by a turbine,” explained Jimenez.

“How we treat our chlorella is much like parenting. So there are theories about exposing your children to natural environments and not protecting them. So at the facility, they talk about chlorella as our baby and that it needs to be exposed to the harsh elements in order to become stronger. So we don't spoil our chlorella and because of that and that exposure, it gets stronger and builds up its own defenses.”

The end product results in a supplement packed with nucleic acids from Chlorella Growth Factor (CGF) nucleotide-peptide complex, iron, beta-carotene, lycopene, lutein, B12 and a significant amount of chlorophyll.
