The certification—a first for the Spanish firm—gives consumers reassurance as to the origins of the product and that it meets all established requirements and protocols.
“It is a very important milestone for Biosearch Life to have obtained this highly important organic product certification for our Hereditum LC40 strain, which motivates us towards a greater commitment to the quality of our products,” says Monica Olivares, R&D director at Biosearch Life.
“It is very gratifying to be able to differentiate ourselves to our end consumer, consequently helping to protect mothers and their babies during breastfeeding. From Biosearch Life we will continue developing our activity focused on R&D to promote the health of our consumers."
Regulation (CE) 834/2007
As well as the origins of the product, the certification also guarantees the product has met best environmental practices, preservation of natural resources, and animal welfare standards and production.
Additionally, the certification, which has been granted by the CAAE certification service, satisfies Regulation (CE) 834/2007 on production and labelling of organic products (and its development standards).
LC40 becomes the first probiotic to receive this accreditation as Biosearch Life looks for further recognition for the other probiotic strains contained in its Hereditum range.
The strains used are isolated from human breast milk and include L.salivarius CECT5713 for oral health, L coryniformis CECT5711 to address immunity and respiratory infections and Bifidobacterium breve CECT2763 to reduce colic.
The organic certification is not the only accreditation the company has been seeking recently. In June this year, Biosearch Life applied for a new patent for a probiotic strain for infertility problems in women.
In what would be the first probiotic-based product for this treatment, the patent for Lactobacillus salivarius CECT5713 represents the third that the company has applied for so far this year.
Patents and certifications
Biosearch Life previously applied for a patent for a product containing almond polyphenols to improve olive hydroxytyrosol bioavailability, increasing the efficacy of this cardioprotective compound.
The firm’s second patent application concerns the use of probiotics that are part of a biocomposite (probiotic-collagen-exopolysaccharide) in the therapy of bacterial vaginosis.
The material uses collagen to provide probiotic bacteria with a protective medium allowing it to produce antibacterial metabolites against vaginal pathogens.
This patent specifically protects the use of any Lactobacillus in the formation of this biomaterial, with its commercialisation expected to focus on the European market.
In 2019, the company also received FSSC 22000 standard certification for its manufacturing plant located in Peñafiel for the design, production and distribution of herbal extracts.
Biosearch Life also gained a Certificate as Ecological Producers and Traders, awarded to its Talayuela-based plant in February of that year for the manufacture of its organic and ecological ingredients.
