International marine certifiers Friend of the Sea (FOS) has certified German-based LR Health & Beauty for its efforts to promote sustainability of its omega-3 enriched-products.

The certification allows LR Health & Beauty to display the Friend of the Sea eco-label on its products.

Paolo Bray, Friend of the Sea director, says: “It’s very gratifying to see companies in the health and beauty industry step and commit to sustainability for the marine-based products they use”.

“It’s a major category regarding the preservation of the marine environment.”

As well as the use of omega-3 fatty acids in food supplement products, LR Health & Beauty also use the fatty acid in the treatment of skin disorders.

Based in Ahlen, Germany, LR Health & Beauty are also active in manufacturing products that include aloe vera.

Its range of care and decorative cosmetics, dietary supplements and perfumes include LR Lifetakt nutritional supplements, LR Aloe Via, the firm’s range of aloe vera skin creams, and LR Zeitgard, an ‘anti-ageing management system’ that includes a hydrating cream gel and eye serum.

Pharmatech thumbs-up

With its headquarters in Milan Italy, FOS is a project of the World Sustainability Organisation, tasked with certifying standards for products and services which respect and protect the marine environment.

In December 2018, Norwegian nutraceutical manufacturer Pharmatech also achieved FOS certification for its use of marine raw materials in liquid, powder and soft gelatin formulations.

In the same year, FOS made available data that ranked the top 5 countries for FOS-labelled supplements.

The United States accounted for more than 50% of total FOS certified supplements (268 companies), followed by France (24), Canada (23), Norway (20) and United Kingdom (14).

Additionally, FOS confirmed the positive trend of key geographic areas such as China (10) and Spain (8), while acknowledged the growth of the Brazilian and Turkish sustainable diet supplement markets.
