Taiyo seeks to aid weight loss with fibre-enriched drink
Sunfiber Orange contains the natural, tasteless and odorless ingredient Taiyo Sunfiber - a proprietary form of guar fibre said to have a satiating effect on the consumer.
The drink is sweetened with Qorus Dolce Classic, which aims to closely mimic the taste and mouthfeel of sugar.
Dr Stefan Siebrecht, general manager of Taiyo GmbH, said: “Today, considering that one in three adults worldwide is overweight (IHME, 2015) and more and more young people are struggling with obesity problems, the drink can both increase fibre uptake and reduce calorie intake — both of which are associated with a weight-reducing effect. A crossover-study has confirmed these beneficial results,”
Guar fiber, or partially hydrolysed guar gum (PHGG), has been in the market for more than 25 years and has been the subject of many clinical trials. Studies have shown guar fibre may regulate appetite by slowing down digestion rate and increasing the body’s satiety hormone CCK.
The research
Sunfiber Orange is the first market-ready beverage to be developed based on the results of a recent UK study on 32 healthy volunteers. The volunteers were divided into three groups: the first group received no beverage, the second received Sunfiber-free beverages, and the third was given beverages that contained Sunfiber and the same caloric value. Satiation and caloric intake were measured and the results showed that consuming Sunfiber-containing beverages significantly increased the feeling of satiety and reduced the energy intake of the next meal.
