Alison Quesnal, corporate affairs director at trade body Natural Health Products New Zealand, told us the industry was shocked that the new Labour-led administration had failed to continue with the parliamentary process for the proposed Natural Health Products Bill.
The bill was the result of years of work, and was set to replace the existing regulations that date back over 30 years.
The majority of the industry in New Zealand believes the bill will provide a higher level of assurance that products are safe, approved and effective, while also strengthening exports by aligning with international standards.
It was first introduced in September 2011 and was awaiting the Committee of the Whole House stage. But when that didn't happen before the nation went to the polls, the bill was removed.
The website of the New Zealand parliament states that the bill was withdrawn on 8 November.
