The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) intends to recall a range of branded food supplements that they suspect are tainted with illegal steroids and stimulants.

Tests by the regulatory body found the stimulant methylhexaneamine (MHA), in Falcon Labs’ Oxyburnpro and Superclen products that was not declared as an ingredient on any of the products.

Further examinations found the steroid Methasterone in Falcon Labs’ Superdrive testosterone booster, was misspelt on the product’s label.

Under current Irish legislation, neither substance is permitted in food.

“We are advising all consumers who may have these Falcon Labs products not to consume them,” warned Dr Pamela Byrne, FSAI’s chief executive.

“This recall also serves as a reminder to all athletes using food supplements, in particular those intending to gain muscle or burn fat, that they should be satisfied with the reliability and integrity of the source of the products they are consuming”, added Dr Byrne.

Athletes caught up

The FSAI also said they were working with Sport Ireland after two rulings by the association were made against athletes who tested positive for banned substances.

The athletes had said they consumed Falcon Labs food supplements.

The FSAI previously issued a recall and press release on DMAA in food supplements back in 2012.

Methasterone has never been authorised as a medicine, but has been found previously on the black market under the name Superdrol.
