AAK targets seniors with push into special nutrition

Swedish ingredients supplier AAK has confirmed first delivery of its senior nutrition product Akovita as the firm continues a push into special nutrition.

Following AAK’s introduction of Akonino and Akomed for the infant and medical nutrition segments, the company has made the first delivery of Akovita, which is targeted at the rapidly growing senior market. The ingredient’s applications include senior nutrition formula powders, liquid supplement drinks and meal replacement shakes.

The new ingredient is designed to provide an energy-dense, readily-absorbed food to support digestive health and maintain an active post-retirement lifestyle.

“This can be achieved by incorporating AAK’s structured fats together with high amounts of the essential omega-3 fatty acids” comments Karel Stoschek, President Special Nutrition at AAK.

Also included in the formulation are plant sterols and egg phospholipids, Stoschek added.

Plant sterols are included to maintain or reduce cholesterol levels, as supported by an EFSA health claim. Omega-3 oils and egg phospholipids are widely recognised for brain and heart health as well as being anti-inflammatory.

Stoschek said the product range can be tailored to customer needs, consistent with AAK’s philosophy on co-development.

AAK said its global manufacturing capability allows worldwide supply, and upscaling of production as demand grows alongside the worlds ageing population.
