6 days to go! Probiota 2015 unveils game-changing innovation in pre- & probiotics

Probiota 2015 in Amsterdam is less than a week a way - a rare place where business leaders and leading researchers gather to transfer knowledge and innovation in the dynamic field of prebiotics and probiotics.

Probiota is organised by the publishers of NutraIngredients, the world’s number one daily news service for the functional foods and supplements industries. For the past seven years it has explored the prebiotic and probiotic scientific frontier, its evolution and commercial application in food, supplements and related product areas.

In 2015 it will do so with a new format designed to encourage greater interaction and collaboration and to uncover previously unseen research and discovery.

Probiota will open on 3 February with a Scientific Frontiers poster session. Research teams from around the world will display posters showcasing their most innovative and insightful projects to be judged by Probiota’s independent Scientific Committee, chaired by professor Bob Rastall, head of Food & Nutritional Sciences at the UK’s University of Reading.

The three winners will be invited to present their work to the conference on its closing day. “Probiota always seeks out the latest and best thinking from the worlds of academia and industry,” said Nathan Gray, science editor of NutraIngredients and FoodNavigator. “Our poster session – already attracting strong contenders – will shine a spotlight on the latest scientific discoveries and their commercial potential.”

The poster session kicks off an agenda that combines a plenary conference with a high level networking programme and a series of interactive panel debates, discussions and presentations. The plenary conference features top-drawer scientists and business leaders including:

Professor Gregor Reid

From academia…

  • Professor Yolanda Sanz is leading a European collaborative project, MyNewGut, looking at the role of the microbiome in behaviour and diet related disorders. She’ll share what the project has revealed about possible solutions to rising obesity.
  • Professor Gregor Reid’s novel probiotic therapies are used by patients worldwide.  His presentation will challenge the west to give the developing world access to probiotics to prevent maternal and infant mortality.
  • Professor Graham Rook, professor of Medical Microbiology at University College London, will consider the connections between the microbiota, background inflammation, low stress resistance and psychiatric disorders.

From industry…

  • Jason Tetro describes himself as a germ evangelist and relationship therapist – a microbiologist of 25 years’ experience, he’s convinced that ‘science made simple’ will create a thriving market for pre- and probiotics.  He’ll tell us how.
  • Dr Bart Smit of NIZO Food Research is an expert in fermentation with a passion for sustainable food processes.  He’ll discuss how current and next generation probiotics can be produced on an industrial scale.

“Probiota bridges the gap between scientific discovery and commercial application,” said NutraIngredients and FoodNavigator senior editor, Shane Starling. “The global market for probiotic food, beverages and supplements is growing strongly, valued at $30 billion (€22b) in 2013, it is expected to reach $45 billion (€33.2b) by 2018. And that excludes the substantial prebiotics and fibres market.”
