Smoking gun: The banning and unbanning of a (dangerous?) fat burner

We scan the evolving regulatory saga involving the fat burning supplement, Dexaprine.

Dutch ban Dexaprine

Things kicked off with news that Dutch authorities had moved against the product made by Californian firm iForce Nutrition after reports of hospitalisations, heart problems, nausea and more.

The Dutch ordered more than 10 online retailers to cease selling the product.

UK follows suit

That prompted the UK medicines agency to issue a warning of its own to the major online UK online retailer of the product, Predator Nutrition.

The same day the UK Food Standards Agency (FSA) issued a warning about DNP, an ingredient used in fat burning products (although DNP is not listed as an ingredient in Dexaprine), linking it two deaths and citing a litany of adverse effects.

EU sports nutrition sector condemns illegal fat burners

The following day, the main group representing the EU sports nutrition sector backs the Dutch and UK actions, and calls for greater levels of enforcement to protect against ‘cowboy operators’.

UK backtracks on ban

Then the UK medicines regulator flip-flops as communication with Predator Nutrition reveals iForce Nutrition altered its formulation for the UK market. The MHRA said the product can stay on the market for the moment but is making ‘further enquiries’.

All the while the firm in question, iForce Nutrition, has remained silent on the matter but was giving away prizes on its Facebook page last week because it gained more than 500 likes in a single day (and now has more than 40,500 likes).
