Univar to reopen fire-damaged Bordeaux plant

Univar’s Blanquefort, France facility is ready to reopen following fire damage to some of its storage tanks in 2009, the company has said.

The site, which is located in the Bordeaux region, supplies, packages and distributes products including minerals, solvents and specialty chemicals to a range of industries, including food and beverage manufacturers.

Univar said it has spent €2m refurbishing the 18,000-square-metre site, working closely with the local council, environmental agencies and the fire service.

“On the new site all storage tanks have been segregated into compartments of four storage tanks, with each compartment segregated by fire resistant walls to ensure minimal risk of exposure to the spread of fire, and efficient containment compliant with Univar’s policies and standards,” the company said.  “In addition, all heated tanks have been upgraded to stainless steel and the tank farm fully automated, with computer-controlled telemetric tanks, valves and pumps.”
