Leading industry lights shine in Sustainable Packaging Virtual Conference

A host of leading industry voices will be taking part in our sister site FoodProductionDaily.com’s virtual conference on Sustainable Packaging which takes place on 8 March, 2012.

Nestle, the world’s largest food company will line up alongside Europe’s leading bioplastics trade body and PMMI, the foremost packaging manufacturers’ association from the US to deliver key insights into the issues driving sustainability in the sector.

Expert overview

The free event, which is exclusively on-line, will kick off with former EUROPEN managing director Julian Carroll, who headed up the industry-leading organization for almost two decades.

He will be giving a uniquely expert overview of the cutting-edge issues framing the sustainable packaging debate and talking about the potential financial and operational impacts of upcoming legislation on the sector.

Philippe Roulet, head of global packaging, materials and training at Nestle, will explain the key factors informing the global giant’s sustainability philosophy and practices regarding packaging. He will also be showcasing some of the tools Nestle uses to measure the environmental footprint of packaging – from raw material extraction to end of life scenarios.

PMMI’s Tom Egan will explore the key trends and breakthroughs on the packaging machinery side and how manufacturers are marrying high performance with resource savings.

What the future holds

Leading industry analyst Andrew Streeter of Datamonitor, will be looking to the future to assess the significance of active and intelligent packaging. The technology is forecast to see huge growth over the next decade and beyond – but just what is its potential to enhance sustainability?

Andy Sweetman, chairman at European Bioplastics, will examine the challenges facing the sector. Does the future of the bioplastics lie with conventional bio-based materials such as PLA or is it in developing plastics such as polyethylene and polypropylene from renewable sources?
