Unilever: Danish distributor must apply for Marmite registration

Unilever has confirmed that it will not apply for a fortified food registration for its yeast breakfast spread Marmite, but says it would support an application from a local distributor.

Marmite became an issue in Denmark last month when shelves of a boutique retailer were emptied of the product as it does not possess an official registration with the Danish Food and Veterinary Administration (DVFA).

A Unilever spokesperson said consumers globally could purchase the product for personal use from its online store at http://www.marmiteshop.co.uk/.

Marmite is fortified with thiamin (vitamin B1), riboflavin (vitamin B2), niacin (vitamin B3), vitamin B12 and folic acid (vitamin B9).

Case-by-case

The DVFA said its National Food Institute assessed each application on a “case-by-case” basis.

“The purpose of the risk assessment is to ensure, that the fortified product can be eaten safely by all parts of the population,” the DVFA said. More information about its fortified food policies can be found here.
