Colorcon expands supplement glazing range after EC safety ruling

Multinational Colorcon has widened its range of food supplement glazes after a number of them were found safe for use under a European Union Directive dealing with food additives other than colours and sweeteners.

The Directive (2010/69/EU) affirmed the safety of a range of substances including polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and six grades of polyethylene glycol (PEG), which are sometimes used to coat food supplements.

“Colorcon was pleased to learn about the Commission’s final decision”, said Kamlesh Oza, general manager for film coatings. “Our new, high productivity PVA-based film coatings offer many benefits for food supplement manufacturers who wish to improve the value of their products. Customers can achieve significant manufacturing efficiency using these new higher solids, lower viscosity formulations which result in shorter coating times.”

He added: “Other key benefits of PVA based systems are improved moisture and oxygen barrier properties, as well as superior adhesion and a high gloss finish. A wide range of colors, using non-synthetic pigments, provide branding opportunity and consumer appeal.”
