A combination of polymethoxylated flavones and palm tocotrienols were found to reduce high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) by 42 percent, according to new data from SourceOne Global Partners. CRP is a marker of inflammation and is reported to be an independent predictor of cardiovascular-related events.
The study – an open label study conducted in five German hospitals with 84 subjects – used a dose of 300 mg per day of a proprietary formulation of citrus polymethoxylated flavones, eriocitrin and palm tocotrienol complex (Cholesstrinol HP, SourceOne). NutraIngredients-USA has not seen the full data.
“In the 12-week study of Cholesstrinol HP, hsCRP was significantly lowered in all patients from 2,4 mg/l to 1,4 mg/l (-42 percent); in patients who responded best the hsCRP further decreased from 3,6 mg/l to 1,7 mg/l (-57 percent) which translates to a considerably lower risk for cardiovascular disease,” said Dr Andreas Supersaxo, a member of Source One’s Medical and Scientific Board and director of R&D for Vesifact of Baar, Switzerland.

Jesse Lopez, president & CEO of SourceOne, told NutraIngredients-USA that the results will form part of a manuscript that will be submitted for publication. “The Journal of Nutrition or Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine are the leading candidates at this time,” said Lopez.
Study details
Eighty-four men and women with elevated cholesterol levels (total cholesterol levels above 200 mg/dl and LDL-cholesterol levels above 160 mg/dl) were recruited to participate in the 12-week open-label study.
The average hsCRP level at the start of the study was 2.4 mg/l. In general, supplementation with Cholesstrinol was found to reduce hsCRP levels to 1.4 mg/l, said the company.
Lopez confirmed that study was continuing in this area: “The next phase of the study will involve a placebo controlled design with 3 groups of subjects with additional clinical endpoints being measured including C-reactive protein, lipid profiles and other inflammation markers including NF-kappaB,” added Lopez.
Importance of inflammation
“Many leaders in the medical community view chronic inflammation as an equally or even more important marker of cardiovascular status than cholesterol or triglyceride levels, and they continue to focus on supplementing with citrus extracts such as polymethoxylated flavones for their extensive benefits for reducing incidence against chronic inflammation,” said Dr Supersaxo. “Chronic inflammation has become a significant factor, not only for cardiovascular health, but overall health and wellness.”
