Vitafoods investigates health claims

As the drama surrounding the European Union health claims system thickens, Vitafoods hosts a day-long seminar that will unpick key issues from marketing practices to the drug/food borderline to legal and consumer perspectives of healthy food and supplement messaging.

Seminar chairman Dr Paul Berryman, the chief executive officer of UK-based Leatherhead Food International, shares highlights from the day with Shane Starling.

These include Caroline Taylor from the UK Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency who will talk about regulatory approaches to those products that lie on the borderline between foods and drugs.

Moving from industry to the public arena, Professor Wim Verbeke from Ghent University will present new data on consumer attitudes to health claims

“I think this will be a really good summary and put things in perspective because let’s face it, if health claims aren’t understood by the person in the street then they are not much good,” he said.

“We’ll be able to put into perspective all the scientific jargon…”
