EU health claim rules cast shadow over science kingdom

The 2006 EU nutrition and health claims regulation is putting the brakes on the commissioning of trials to back claims, according to Cédric Bourges-Sevenier, PhD, general manager at French science and regulatory consultancy, Nutraveris.

He told Shane Starling the uncertainty being created by the regulation meant few companies were willing to fork out the cash required for trials that may do little to back claims.

But an adjustment period was occurring and the regulation was having the positive effect of raising scientific standards when it came to food matrices.
