In the last few years, the ingredients supplier has enjoyed high sales growth in India, including a 30 per cent rise in turnover last year that followed the opening of its new liaison office in February.
Cognis plans to build on this base with the creation of a wholly-owned Indian subsidiary, Cognis India, which will operate under the name Cognis Specialty Chemicals Pvt.
Indian projects and initiatives
Mumbai-based Cognis India will employ technical and commercial managers to work on behalf of its three main business units – Care Chemicals, Nutrition & Health and Functional Products.
Technical service facilities will also be established for Care Chemicals and Functional Products to respond to technical enquires and demonstrate product benefits to customers.
Meanwhile, Cognis continues “to explore options for establishing local sourcing and production facilities” but currently has no settled plans.
Cognis sees significant growth potential in India and views the establishment of a presence on the ground as a vital step towards fulfilling its goals.
“Many of our existing and potential customers are also exploring business opportunities in India, and our direct links in the country have enhanced our customers’ confidence,” said Guido Appl, general manager of Cognis India.
Impact of new liaison office
Since opening its liaison office, Cognis says it has been able establish closer ties with customers, distributors and suppliers in India and raise awareness about its products and services.
Cognis claims the move has also enabled the company to improve its understanding of the Indian market, quickly anticipate developments and therefore exploit new business opportunities.
“Opening the liaison office proved to be a valuable strategic step, and showed the potential within this market, which in turn prompted our decision to establish a full affiliate,” said Appl.
