What NutraIngredients took away from Vitafoods 2009

Last week, executives in the functional food and dietary supplement industries gathered in Geneva for the sector’s biggest European trade event. Here, NutraIngredients reveals some of the key messages it took away from Vitafoods 2009.

NutraIngredients science editor Steven Daniells was there to sniff out the latest science news; Shane Starling, editor of NutraIngredients Europe, dug his nose into industry developments and all things regulatory; and Lorraine Heller, editor of NutraIngredients-USA gave a nod to the North American market.

Top of peoples’ minds at this year’s show were Europe’s new health claims regulations, which have essentially put the breaks on innovation in the field.

But Vitafoods provided fertile ground for discussion between industry and regulators, where key topics were covered and some questions were answered.

In terms of traffic at the booths, everyone we spoke to had the same comment: The nature of business has undergone a fundamental shift this year, with a focus on quality rather than quantity.
