Collagen formulas target smoothie market

French gelatine and collagen specialist Rousselot has launched a range of hydrolysed collagen ingredients that will target the European and international smoothie markets.

The new ingredients take advantage of technologies Rousselet acquired when it purchased BHJ Peptan Products in July and are being marketed on their weight management potential as well as their ability to boost skin health.

The weight management claim is based around the idea of satiety, and testing had demonstrated the 97 per cent protein ingredient could deliver in this area, said Rousselot communication manager, Caroline Brochard-Garnier.

In addition, studies have demonstrated 10g/day supplementation with hydrolysed collagen delivers bone and joint health benefits.

Rousselot is presenting the new range to industry at the Healthy Ingredients Europe trade show in Paris in November and has concocted some formulas it hopes will appeal to beverage manufacturers. These are Healthy Bone Smoothie, Superfruit Me, Young and Beautiful and Dream Slim.

The company, whose gelatine ingredients are typically used as fat and sugar replacers, said it would also be unveiling new formulations in Paris as well as gelatine offerings.

International presence

Rousselot’s collagen ingredients are present in many food categories including smoothies in global markets including Japan, Europe and the Americas.

In beverages, Rousselot’s collagen ingredients cost about €0.04 per serving and are used in about 50 products. ore than half of these products are sold in Japan and south east Asia.

The new range comes in both powdered and liquid form.

Brochard-Garnier said the additions mean Rousselot has a range of ingredients with varying molecular weights that would appeal to the widest variety of product formulators.

The range is also “close to having no taste, no odour”, she said.

“It is easy to integrate, and highly soluble. While we are targeting the drinks market with this launch it is also suitable for bars, tablets.”

In a statement the company said:

Depending on its particular characteristics (raw materials and molecular weight), each Rousselot/Peptan hydrolysed collagen product is more than ever able to meet the technical and organoleptic requirements of specialists in nutrition, beauty or health.”

Part of the Netherlands-based VION Food Group, Rousselot has a staff of 2,400 people and operates 12 plants in Europe, North America, South America and Asia.
