BI Nutraceuticals expands organic line to meet demand

Supplier BI Nutraceuticals has announced it is expanding its product line to include six new organic ingredients - signalling increased demand in the organic herbals sector.

The California-based manufacturer has added organic anise seed, fennel seed, ginger root, licorice root, psyllium and slippery elm. The new offerings have expanded BI's organic product line to a total of 23 products.

The company's expanding organic line is stimulated by demand, as consumers of healthy products become more aware of the origin of their foods and supplements.

In November, a report entitled "The Global Market for Organic Food & Drink" by British consultancy Organic Monitor projected revenues in this category to approach US$40 bn this year.

"As the industry demand for organic ingredients grows, BI Nutraceuticals is there to meet that need with new high-quality botanical offerings," said BI president and CEO George Pontiakos.

Each of these ingredients is certified organic and treated using the company's proprietary steam sterilization process, Protexx HP. The company claims this process delivers maximum reduction in potential contaminants while preserving color, flavor and bioactive components.

Protexx HP employs super-heated dry steam to reduce microbiological load with results comparable to that of treatment with ethylene oxide or irradiation without the potential regulatory issues.

BI is a global full-service supplier of ingredients including whole herb powders and teas, standardized and drug ratio extracts, custom blends, vitamins and minerals.
