ONC takes Meg-3 to Mexico

Ocean Nutrition Canada has announced the creation of an exclusive distribution partnership in Mexico through FX Morales y Asociados, allowing the fish oil supplier to enter the Mexican market.

The maker of MEG-3 branded fish oil ingredients has been rapidly adding notches to its belt of late - first with the creation of its branded omega-3 and later with the use of these ingredients in a widening range of products.

The move into Mexico appears to be another sweep for Ocean Nutrition as it delves deeper into the booming omega-3 ingredient market.

"We know that we'll have ten different premium food brands with fish oil in them soon," Ocean Nutrition executive vice president of global sales and marketing Ian Lucas told NutraIngredients-USA.com at SupplySide West. He would not reveal what brands these are.

Ocean Nutrition is going more and more in the direction of functional foods that can be eaten everyday, according to Lucas.

"People are creatures of habit," said Lucas. "It helps if you can put the fish oil in the food they eat everyday."

And FX Morales y Asociados might be just the ticket to bring Ocean Nutrition's MEG-3 brand to premium labels sold on retail shelves throughout Mexico.

"Many major food companies operate in the Mexican market and partnering with FX Morales y Asociados allows us to service these important customers with one of the most professional organizations in the Mexican food industry," said Lucas.

Meg-3 contains the omega-3 essential fatty acids DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (or eicosapentaenoic acid). Studies have linked an adequate consumption of DHA to the promotion of brain, eye and heart health, while EPA has been linked to anti-inflammatory benefits.
