Pronova Biocare pushes up purity levels

Omega-3 supplier Pronova Biocare has followed rival Croda's lead in
claiming that it now offers oils that exceed industry and
regulatorypurity standards.

The Norwegian firm says it is now lowering their specification limits for organic pollutants and heavy metals in all oils, ethylesters (EE) and triglycerides (TG) alike.

Pronova has developed a new technology for removal of organicpollutants from marine oils. It was patented early last year.

Earlier this month Croda said its high potency EPA and DHA concentrates had dioxin and furan levels of below 1pg WHO-TEQ/g. These compare with existing purity standards of 2pg WHO-TEQ/g as set out in the EC directive setting maximum levels for certain contaminants in food stuffs and the US Council for Responsible Nutrition's (CRN) omega-3 monograph.

Government bodies such as the UK's Food Standards Agency and the US Food and Drug Administraion (FDA) have highlighted the potential for environmental contaminants such as PCBs and dioxins in fish products.

Fish oil suppliers say they are seeing customer demand for ever higher purity levels and confidence in product quality.
