Laboratoires Sérobiologiques, a division of speciality chemicals group Cognis France, has developed an ingredient based on a tropical plant for use in haircare products.

Puricare LS 9658, which contains micro-proteins from the seeds of Moringa oleifera, a tropical plant known as the 'miracle tree', protects hair from enviromental pollution such as UV rays and dust, said the firm. Moringa oleifera seeds are rich in proteins and oils, and are traditionally used in medicine and as a food additive.

Unlike the skin, which is better able to fight harmful effects of the environment, hair lacks such intrinsic protection and regeneration systems, according to the company. The use of 2 per cent Puricare LS 9658 protects hair against UV and exhaust gas, and preserves hair cleanliness by decreasing the adhesion of urban particulate pollution, claims Cognis, making the hair both stronger and brighter.

Puricare LS 9658 is said to be easy to formulate, and can be used in shampoos, lotions or rinses. It does not affect the colour, odour or stability of the hair care product, and can be used in crystal-clear shampoos.

Laboratoires Sérobiologiques, which makes innovative active ingredients and concepts for cosmetics, developed the ingredient during its 'Hair and Pollution' research programme. .
