Kashi goes organic

US natural foods company Kashi has introduced two new organic cereals with added berries. Its products will be among the first to feature the new "USDA Organic" symbol, indicating that a product is at least 95 per cent organic.

Americans looking for a mouth-watering, organic cereal need to look no further, according to natural foods company Kashi, which has introduced two new organic cereals with added berries.

The company said that its products will be among the first to feature the new "USDA Organic" symbol, a result of the USDA National Organic Standards being introduced on 21 October 2002, which indicates that a product is at least 95 per cent organic.

Kashi Organic Promise is available in Strawberry Fields and Cranberry Sunshine flavours. The cereals contain organic wholegrains and whole organic fruit. Cranberry Sunshine contains organic dried cranberries as well as a special variety of whole organic corn.

"More than ever, consumers are trying to make the best possible choice for the health of themselves and their families," said Jeff Johnson, director of nutrition at Kashi. "People are choosing to eat organically for health reasons, and the National Organic Standards will give consumers the confidence in knowing they are purchasing foods that are grown without pesticides and genetically modified organisms."

The cereals will be available in the US from November at select grocery and natural foods stores, including Whole Foods, Wild Oats, and Trader Joe's, at a suggested retail price of $3.79 - $3.99 for an approximate 10.4 ounce box.

Kashi claims all of its products are natural, minimally processed, and free of highly refined sugars, artificial additives and preservatives. Other brands include Kashi GoLEAN Natural Slimming System Cereals, Bars, Shakes and Waffles; Kashi Good Friends cereals; Kashi Heart to Heart cereal; Puffed Kashi and Honey Puffed Kashi cereals, Kashi Medley cereal and Kashi TLC Tasty Little Crackers.
