Amarillo Biosciences of Texas has signed two new agreements which will see its dietary supplements enter China, Taiwan and Pakistan for the first time.

STC International of New Jersey will handle distribution of Amarillo's Maxisal brand in the Far East, while local firm Majsons Corporation of Karachi will handle sales in Pakistan.

Maxisal is a patented dietary supplement and is the trade name for pharmaceutical grade anhydrous crystalline maltose, which has been found to relieve complaints of dry mouth, enhance salivary function and promote oral comfort. Amarillo Biosciences is the sole worldwide supplier of Maxisal for the dry mouth market apart from in Japan.

Dr Joseph M. Cummins, president and CEO of Amarillo Biosciences, said: "We are very pleased that Maxisal will be sold by our new distributors in their respective territories. Researchers estimate that at least 20 per cent of the population over 50 years of age suffer from persistent complaints of dry mouth. The number of people with dry mouth is even greater if you include people who suffer from autoimmune diseases or take one of the many prescription medications that cause dry mouth."

He added: "Our innovative new product will enable us to continue to take advantage of the many growth opportunities in the biotechnology market. We believe this dry mouth market is poised for significant growth."
