US supplement and vitamin manufacturer Enzymatic Therapy has introduced a fibre tablet that can be taken without water. The chewable tablets are said to promote the healthy function of the gastrointestinal system.
The new product, Fiber Delights, contains a proprietary blend of oat (Avena sativa) bran fibre and enriched inulin fibre with fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) from chicory root. The natural ingredients are said to provide both soluble and insoluble fibre and provide a significant portion of the recommended daily fibre intake.
Enzymatic Therapy claims that two chewable tablets daily can promote bowel regularity and decrease occasional constipation.
The inulin and FOS in Fiber Delights are both prebiotics which stimulate the growth of beneficial microflora in the digestive system. The company cites a 15-day study of volunteers who consumed a controlled diet supplemented with inulin and FOS - the number of "friendly" intestinal microflora increased while the number of undesirable microflora decreased.
Inulin and FOS also influence intestinal function by increasing stool frequency and weight. These factors help to promote regularity and support gastrointestinal health by shortening the amount of time waste material lingers in the intestines.
Fiber Delights is available in chocolate and vanilla flavours. The tablets are packaged in a 60-count bottle that retails for $14.95.
