Natrol Inc, a developer and marketer of nutritional products, reported this week that its GarliPure™ brand of garlic was selected for a recent study conducted by the US National Institutes of Health (NIH).
GarliPure™ is made from Pure-Gar® garlic, a top-selling garlic ingredient in the United States.
"GarliPure™ has an optimal amount of the five active compounds found in garlic, making it a superior value for our consumers." said Elliott Balbert, Natrol's chief executive officer and president.
"There are approximately 250 studies showing garlic's impact on reducing cholesterol and providing other cardiovascular benefits, and numerous others reporting on such benefits as anticancer, antimicrobial and antioxidant activity," said Dr. Swee Seet, Natrol's director of Research & Product Development.
The NIH scientists heading the recent research stated that they chose to study garlic "because of its anticholesterol activity."
"This isn't surprising," said Ehtisham Rabbani, Natrol's vice president, Marketing and Product Development, "because garlic is the oldest reported medicinal food in history and has been used for centuries in ancient Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Indian and Chinese civilisations. It is also the single most widely researched botanical in the world."
"We encourage the NIH to continue further research, and will support them in any way possible. In the meantime, we continue to recommend that our consumers check with their physician before combining any medication, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter products and dietary supplements," said Rabbani.
