Researchers from the University of Stirling have used FAO data to map the future use of fishery by-products in the production of marine ingredients like omega-3. They found an overall increasing trend in the amount of fishmeal and fish oil being obtained from by-products but room to increase use.

With backing from the trade group The Marine Ingredients Organisation (IFFO), the UK researchers used models of current and future fisheries and aquaculture production to estimate availability of marine raw material for the next five and ten years.

The most potential for gains in fishmeal and fish oil from under-utilised resources from both aquaculture and wild capture was in Asia and China, amounting to about 27 million tonnes of raw marine material.

IFFO technical director Dr Neil Auchterlonie told us the calculations provided a “strategic overview” on how the production patterns of fishmeal and fish oil may change over time.

“Models are important in guiding decision-making for the industry and part of that will be reviewing how markets will change and plan for investment in plants to process some of the new raw material that becomes available,” he said.

“We also want to communicate the opportunity to governments as their help in developing logistics and processing facilities could reduce waste and contribute to the growth of aquaculture.”

The researchers said the collection and processing of all by-products not currently used for fish oil extraction would amount to about 50,000 tonnes of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) with around 80% of this coming from wild capture fisheries.

They claim this would increase global supply of EPA and DHA by around 25%.

They also said this supply could be nearly doubled to around 170,000 tonnes of EPA and DHA if all fish were processed to produce additional by-product. However, they conceded around 70% of this would come from Asian countries like China where most fish was sold whole and there were few fish processing plants.

The model predicts a future shift towards oil from by-products from aquaculture fisheries, but warned this would be good news for protein but not necessarily EPA and DHA, which are found in higher levels in whole wild-caught pelagic fish.

Push toward by-products

Dr Auchterlonie said the concept of using by-products was not a new one, with UK fishmeal production running on nearly 100% by-product raw material.

“However, it is fair to say that there have been some recent pressures on the availability of raw material from capture fisheries for the production of fishmeal and fish oil, especially with the recent El Nino event in South America and subsequent effects on the landings of Peruvian anchovy,” he said.

“In addition, there are drivers such as the EU’s Circular Economy Strategy which aims to manage production and consumption across the whole cycle and specifically supports the market for raw materials.”

Yet the Stirling University researchers said by-products were likely to remain of low value and therefore large quantities would be required to make collection “economically attractive”.

Auchterlonie said here the growth and refinement of aquaculture could spark real change.

“Maintaining consistent supply of raw material is one of the biggest challenges in the sector. Improved collection of by-product from capture fisheries will help.

“The growth of aquaculture and the availability of raw material through that supply is something which will also help with that factor, as aquaculture by-product is consistent in both availability and quality.”

Search for partners and colaborators for reply to the Horizon CallBG-08-2017. .

Dear colleagues,

I would inform you that how EGOCREANET / UNIVERSITY' of FLORENCE, we started to form a consortium to respond to the BG-08-2017. We started to think about the development of fish feed, that 'as with Enel Green Power (Italy), we have the' idea of developing microalgae production at low cost using CO2, H2O and Geothermal heat, the latter given for free and in high quantity by Enel. As a result so we thought that this production of microalgae, today being tested, can be used to produce feed for water- and mariculture.

Starting from this initial approach we look to growth a good international consortium to innovate the challenging fish-feed production .

So that I ask to all potential partners and stakeholders to send to EGOCREANET c/o Business Incubator of the University of Florence a simple letter of support in the letterhead of your organization, in which you could specify what will be the contribution vs in response to requests from the call: on the Topic :

"Innovative sustainable solutions for improving the safety and dietary properties of seafood"
see: https://ec.europa.eu/research/participants/portal/desktop/en/opportunities/h2020/topics/bg-08-2017.html

I hope really in your important partnership . I wait for your kind reply. Very cordially Paolo Manzelli 2016/AUG/24

.INFO. on BLUE BIO-TECHNOLOGY PROMOTION OF FUNCTIONAL AQUA-FEED FUTURE
by: Paolo Manzelli <pmanzelli2016@gmail.com>
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
--> EGOCREANET .INFO. on BLUE BIO-TECHNOLOGY PROMOTION OF FUNCTIONAL AQUA-FEED FUTURE
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
BACKGROUND : What is known about the problem..

The blue-bioeconomy innovation growth is becoming a world challenge which includes most of the key enabling eco-technologies and functional fish feed innovation for improving aqua- and mari- culture. Egocreanet (NGO/ University of Florence -IT) would actively preparing such blue bioeconomy innovation to effectively support the development of European fish-food SMEs by promoting the participation to the call H-BG-08/2017. (dead line 14 Feb 2017).
-------------------------------------------
TOPIC : Innovative sustainable solutions for improving the safety and dietary properties of seafood.
see: https://ec.europa.eu/research/participants/portal/desktop/en/opportunities/h2020/topics/bg-08-2017.html
---------------------------------------------
The call BG-08-2017 essentially "should aim to generate new multidisciplinary knowledge to develop commercial solutions for improving the socio-economic and environmental sustainability of the seafood production and processing industry, while also contributing to product quality and safety for human and animal wellfare".
So that we look to implement the project idea realizig a consortium able to be involved in in the development of innovative fish-feed solutions covering the range of the necessary academic scientific fields (fish nutrigenetics
, diet development, health and physiological well-being, but also specific competences related to the Fish Feed Management that includes choosing the right feed, using a correct feeding method, calculating the feeding cost and ensuring the cost effectiveness of fish farms to get for a rapid and efficient exploitation of the solutions developed in the project.
------------------------------------------------------
IMPORTANT NOTE:
On this topic are important to fully consider the following key messages :
• Aquaculture production should increase from 60 to 120 Mtons by 2030 if we want to maintain the level of seafood consumption, and access to raw material is a major concern
• Fish are among the best feed converter with a very low carbon footprint and food conversion rate compared to terrestrial animals and its fish farming can be considered as "relatively more sustainable"
• Alternative source of marine fish oil is a major challenge. Lack of Omega3 long chains is a major challenge and alternative sources should be further searched to complete fish oil (1.3 M tons/year) . since 75% of the total
world production is already used by fish farming .
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
--> Besides in particular in that context Egocreanet would promote Research & Innovation and Developments in "algal biotechnology" throght equiping a European network on Marine- and Aquaculure industry with multidisciplinary specialist's knowledge to optimise current and future challenges in the field of fish-feed optimization.
--> Starting from those premises now please See he following preliminary proposal: by EGOCREANET NGO /FLORENCE UNIVERSITY (IT) to reply to the Horizon Call H-BG-08-2017)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Search For Partners - Issue:INNOVATIVE SUSTAINABLE SOLUTIONS for IMPROVING SAFETY and DIETARY PROPERTIES of SEAFOOD. (in achronim “EFFFD”)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Outlook: : In the world today almost half of the fish and seafood comes from aquaculture , this trend has been increasing the fishfood market but also to deal with the preservation of species at risk of extinction. With stagnating yields from capture fisheries and increasing demand for aquatic products, expectations for aquaculture is to increase its contribution to the world’s production of sea-foods are very high, and there is also hope that aquaculture will continue to strengthen its role in contributing to support human health and sustainable food supply. For this sope the project proposal would establish an enabling a global environment for innovation and growth to allow aquaculture to realise its full potential though
understanding better also the social and economic dimensions of aquaculture at different scales of research , and industry . Decisive therefore will be to develop eco-economic criteria for a sustainable solutions of improving safety and dietary properties of seafood and suited to varius fish species in order to improve the nutraceutical and probiotics properties of the fish-feed and health and to ensure both human nutrition and animal needs and welfare.

1. TITLE : State what will be investigated.
The project, proposed by Egocreanet, on the theme (Eco-innovative, Fish Food/Feed nutrient diets in acronim “EFFFD”) would compete to the world wide challenge on both nutritional and environmental aspects of aquaculture products to develop European innovative, sustainable and secure acquaculture solutions, since sea food production has to become nearly double in the next decade in order to meet the increasing seafood safery of market demand.

--> Goals :what is the purpose of investigation in Research and innovation.

One of the important Goals of the Egocreanet Ngo Firenze proposal in reply to the call BG-08-2017 is to develop a study of R&D .for the industrial
development of high-value Fish-Feed products from micro-algae. This shall contribute to develop new and sustainable resource for aquaculture .
The main target of the study will be how can be obtainable high purified omega 3 fatty acids oil (DHA/EPA) from micro-algae to gain high value fish-feed products for aquaculture fish nutrition ..These study will be evaluated for their sustainability starting from an invesigation of the recent state of the art on the above issue and scaled-up from lab to demonstrative prototype level.

What is expected to be found from the project's objecives and strategy ?

The project EFFFD has to develop a transdisciplinary community of multi-disciplinary research based on (agronomists, biologists, veterinarians, aquaculture esperts, nutritionists, researchers in nutrigenomics of the market sociology of fisheries etc ..) and European fish and fish feed industry working together towards a mutual goal of ensuring eco-bio-innovation solutions for developing a healthy, safe and sustainable aquaculture system aiming to generate new knowledge to develop commercial solutions of high quality and safety on the basis of :
a) Better understanding and managing the effects of aquaculture on the environment and viceversa optimizing the advanced knowledge on managing the effects of climate change on aquaculture
b) Identifying novel fish feed ingredients and optimizing their use as feed raw materials and nutraceutival supplments or to improve innovative and sustainable nutritional fishfeed solutions for the aquaculture industry using microalgae and other sources of
proteins as they derived from selected insects, aiming to optimize the funtional properties of fishfood.
c) Breeding and genetics selection approaches for fish nutrition and welfare
d) Develop a better understanding on fish metabolism, physiology and intestinal microflora to develop new products in aquaculture diets.
e) Improving novel and innovative ideas to give breakthrough anf forecasts of the Future of Aquafish-feeds including the goal to reduce risks to animal and human health and thus increase EU consumer’s confidence in making better choices on seafood healthy diets.
